On February 22, programmers gathered in EA Studio Cities Bucharest, Redwood City, Stockholm and Vancouver to do battle in EA Code Wars, a one-day hack-a-thon. Participants came from all over the globe to see who could create the best mobile app or game in just a single day, all for a chance to win cash and prizes. One team even traveled 10 hours by train to compete!
EA Code Wars kicked off on the same day across multiple time zones, which led to electricity on the ground within the heated 24-hour creative window. Teams with five members or less faced off at each location in both the main mobile challenges and a series of side quest challenges.
At the end of the twelve-hour time period, each mobile game was presented and judged by a panel of EA experts. The winning apps were scored on originality, functionality and presentation, and the best games at each location then advanced for a chance at the grand prize.
After much deliberation, we are proud to announce that the winner of EA Code Wars grand prize is UFO Again, created by Stefan Dinca and Sorin Rizea (Bad-Donkey Games) in Bucharest. The winning team presented a nearly final product which included multi-touch features and functional gameplay that allows you to save the world from an attack of UFOs. The project was built in Flash using the Adobe Air run-time environment for mobile devices and the Starling 2D framework for GPU accelerated graphics.
Now that they’ve won, the team will be sent on an all-expenses paid trip to the EA Studio of their choice to get a behind-the-scenes look at how EA makes games.
Congratulations to all those who participated around the world!
